Ascent Trip ReportThis peak was the mission for the day. Could see it somewhat from Boise, and didn't look like a ton of snow, especially since I was looking at the north side, I figured I would be good to go.
Been to silver city once before and we could have easily knocked it off then, but it was nice making a return trip. The road wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered it from 5 years ago. A little muddy in spots, but I easily made it to War Eagle, and probably could have kept going, but I hit a sizeable snow drift and decided I wouldn't test my luck in the work vehicle and get some exercise.
I did forget how much I hate hiking roads though, and somewhat regretted my decision as I plodded towards Turntable, finally getting some off trail action and briefly talking to a UTVer hunting for deer. Very windy today, essentially Wyoming levels. Topped out turntable before long and thought it was funny this was the only summit out of the 3 that had a summit log. Also the only one without mechanical equipment, so that was nice.
Didn't stay long before descending towards Hayden. Lots more snow on this side. The Hayden climb was considerably more extensive, but still incredibly easy for a 3ker. Spent some time up at the summit, and although it was a very warm day for Novemeber, the wind was getting worse as the day went on and the temperatures were dropping slightly. Nice view of the treasure valley and some of the snowy peaks beyond.
Went back down the ridge to Turntable then had a long walk on the road back around, but once around I continued on the ridge, which turned out to be a waste of time as the ridge goes up steeply through snow then back down into the woods, not as direct as I was hoping. Found an abandoned tent and water filter so I at least grabbed the water filter to take out. Not long after I made it to my truck near the base of War Eagle, and I resituated slightly to make a very fast ascent of that one.
Successful day in the Owyhees and got a good workout. |
