Ascent Trip Report

College Mountain

To get there:
College Mountain is located just off of Route 15 between Frederick, MD to the south and Gettysburg, PA to the north. From the south make a left onto Motters Station Rd, then the first left onto St Anthony Rd. I believe you will then want to make your first right onto Grotto Rd (there will be signs for ‘Grotto of Lourdes’ (http://www.msmary.edu/grotto/)). Parking is on the left.

My climb:
First of all this mountain should not be done during hunting season. I must have passed 30 tree stands and imagine that the area is heavily used for deer hunting.

I walked through the ‘Old Mt Saint Mary’s Cemetery’ and continued up hill. The climb is rather straight forward, up…up…up. There are no trails to the top that I ran across. I bushwhacked uphill and checked my GPS occasionally. Once on the ridge I followed it to both College Mountain peaks. The forest is pretty open, that is it wasn’t a constant fight through brush. Round trip was a little over 3 hours. Not much else to say except a GPS is very helpful.

Wildlife:
Eastern Box Turtles, Whitetail Deer, Eastern Gray Squirrels, Eastern Chipmunks and a Black Rat Snake. The only birds I recall seeing were a few Downy Woodpeckers.
