Ascent Trip Report

I decided to hike the Balsam Mountain loop. After a short drive over to the Rider Hollow through a very interesting and kind of spooky feeling dirt road the trail starts off following a nice flowing creek. I was wearing the same garb as yesterday. No rain yet but big drips from the trees making it feel like it was raining. Passing over several small bridges was cool then ascending slowly. the trail for the most part was very soft underfoot and very very lush. The foliage was in full effect at knee to hip height. My concern was bears most of the time as I did not want to surprise one hiding in the tall foliage. the summit offered one viewpoint which was mostly clouded-in I could see forest below at one point but mostly clouds. The hike down was easy, at the last trail intersection with the red and blue trail the sky darkened and I feared for heavy rain, so I quickly donned my rain pants, and just-in-time. The rain was heavy and would be for the rest of the hike. I encountered a man in blue jeans and t-shirt on his way to the summit followed by his wife which called me lucky for having the rain gear. they both had absolutely no gear or water with them and she said that they had hiked the loop the day before. I continued down mostly soft trails and finished easily a short time later.
