Ascent Trip Report

Although I enjoyed a pleasant afternoon walk through a high evergreen forest, I would not recommend this if you seek glorious scenery or a challenging climb. The best scenery is on the drive up. The hike near the top is mostly a nearly flat walk on abandoned forested tracks with some bushwhacking over fallen trees.

But if you want to do it, turn right on Vail Ave. (rd?) in the middle of the Angel Fire complex and continue on it as it turns into El Camino Real and winds its way upward through zillions of expensive ski retreats. Around 10,600 ft. the rd. was blocked by heavy construction vehicles putting in pipe so they can build ( I presume) more McMansions. This added about an extra mile each way. If your way is not blocked continue onward. Just past a large water tank on the right, the road, which cuts a wide graded swathe through the woods uo to this point, narrows and turns into a grassy forest track. A 4wd vehicle could continue onward for several hundred more yards until you hit berms and fallen trees. At this point you're less than a mile from your goal but the way can become confusing as the area is crisscrossed by many abandoned and often overgrown tracks. I would have had difficulty navigating in and out without my GPS.
