Ascent Trip Report

From Highway 395,south of Lee Vining, exit east onto Hwy 120, look for a dirt road heading south across from the signed Panum Crater access road (about 3 miles from 395). Follow this gravelly road suitable for a regular car for 1.75 miles to a left hand junction with Forest Rd 1S03(sandy in sections and recommend high clearance).
You can see this road heading west towards the Mono Craters. At a left hand turn elev 7400ft the hike begins. Start heading west uphill on fairly steep sandy slopes with scattered trees and low brush. You will top out at a saddle just north of Crater Mountain elev 8700ft turn south and continue up sandy slopes to the crater rim. The highpoint is the angular rock outcropping on the northwest side. It is easy class II if you ascend the north side. Register on summit.
