Ascent Trip Report

Kelly and I parked on Rocky Pond Road in a pull-out area maybe a half mile east of Hayden Road. We ran west on Rocky Pond, and then turned left when it met Hayden Road, and then turned right on Samuels Way. Samuels Way led toward a boat landing on Rocky Pond before becoming a 4WD road leading to a couple of cottages, and then it becomes a snowmobile trail.

We saw numerous No Trespassing signs along Samuels Way. I think only the surrounding land is private and not the road or snowmobile trail. At any rate, we saw a couple of groups of people along Rocky Pond, and they paid no attention to us.

The snowmobile trail was blazed with orange diamonds, and there were helpful signs at junctions pointing to nearby points of interest, including Birch Hill. After a while the orange diamond trail branched off to the right, and we continued straight, following the directions to Birch Hill posted on the signs. While we ran uphill, I looped back periodically as we run at different paces, so we wouldn't get separated. After a while (not quite 3 miles from the car) we reached the cell tower on Birch Hill. The tower looks like a fire tower from a distance, but it isn't. There is a partial view toward the east, but with low clouds we couldn't see much. I don't know how much better the view would be on a clear day.

We ran down the auto road to the base of Birch Hill, and ran back up to the top, to get in some hill training. I then ran back down and did a second climb, but Kelly opted out of that one. We returned along the snowmobile trail back to our car. Our total running time was over 80 minutes.

There are more trails in this area and I'd like to return and explore them someday.
