Ascent Trip ReportFlew into Pico from Lisbon 09:30, picked up hire car, which took a while, and drove straight to the mountain. Checked in at Casa Montanha (you have to register online in advance even if climbing independently; €25). They're very safety conscious. You sign out when you start the climb and sign back in when you get back. You get given a GPS tracker that you can call them for help on and that they'll buzz you on if you go too far off track. There are large posts at periodic intervals along the trail, positioned after the first few such that you should be able to see the next one from each (in good visibility). And they tried to dissuade me from climbing because of the rain forecast; when I said I was happy to climb anyway, they got me to sign a disclaimer saying that I'd pay for my own rescue. The rain in fact was very light, barely rain at all, but the cloud did make it sometimes hard to see the next post I suppose. The path was generally obvious, but in some places there were alternative lines and there was a bit more (very easy) scrambling than I expected. Path of often loose volcanic rock so while I saw a couple of people doing it in trainers, I was happy to have toe protection and ankle support. Clouded over most of the way, but sun finally started to break through the cloud during the descent. Bet the views would be great in good visibility.
