Ascent of Spathi on 2021-09-12Date: | Sunday, September 12, 2021 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Spathi | Location: | Greece | Elevation: | 7047 ft / 2147 m |
Ascent Trip ReportI parked my car at 35.133922, 25.483728. However, I think it is more logical to park a few hundred metres earlier in the shadows of the trees, where the paved road ends. Driving on riverbed roads isn't very efficient :)
Very well marked and good quality E4 trail. Forks at the SW of the ridge. Easy going, never too steep. SW ridge trail gradually ascends to the top. It is 150 metres before the summit trail becomes a bit steeper and less distinguishable. But not much is needed anyway. The summit is marked with a concrete trig pillar. It was an absolutely clear day. All the surrounding vistas were well visible. including nearby Afentis Christos 2141m. which is just 7 metres lower than Spathi 2148m. It looks like it's a common feature in Creta to have two quite separated peaks with only a few meters' difference. Mount Ida 2456m and Pachnes 2453m, Oros Titiron 748m and Mouri 747m, Volakias 2116m and Volakias South top 2102m, Sidherotas 1175m and Sidherotas West top 1165m are just a few examples. On the summit, I met a quartet of local guys. They were very proud that they climbed Spathi using a new route from the NE. After half an hour on top, I descended the same route as I came.
2h10 to the top, 0h30 minutes on the top, 4h15 roundtrip.
