Ascent Trip Report

From SW, Campingplatz Seespitze, verge parking W of footbridge, or €4 E of bridge. Tarmac road up thru campsite connects with trail shown on OpenStreetMap, good trail up thru forest, past hut onto ridge, bypassing the two minor tops, final steep climb and trimmed dwarf pine lead to summit cairn, no cross. My 300th Alps P600m summit...

After a too leisurely Tauern circuit just across the road, I was up against it. Combined challenges of rain and thunder (which I'd forgotten about) and darkness. I'd managed to arrange my last few days schedule to accommodate the 300 peak milestone: now I just had to climb this straightforward peak... The forecast was no better in the morning, and I had a 12 hour drive to Calais. So it had to be this evening, thunder permitting. After a quick refuel I headed up from the campsite, cruising up the zigzag trail to reach the ridge (700m ascent) in an hour. A little light cooling rain, rumble of a jet overhead but no thunder yet. The trail continued easily along the ridge, until a steep gravelly climb destroyed my rhythm, and a dwarf pine obstacle course led to the summit. I heard the first thunder a minute before summitting, some way off, then another distant peal from another direction. The summit was marked by a small neat cairn topped by a tiny buxom Buddha (possibly my first non Catholic alpine summit). Nirvana would presumably be all 618 Alpine P600s, except I'd not survive the complete list - too hard/dangerous. A watery sun emerged to illuminate my 300th. My factor of safety increased as I left the summit, descended the summit ridge then the side ridge to the (closed) hut. I felt more secure now, down in the forest, except that the light was fading. I just avoided using my head torch, but it was almost dark as I strolled back through the campsite. Delighted to have finished my Austrian Alps trip with this milestone 300th peak, which was more memorable than expected.
