Ascent Trip ReportFifth Connecticut county high point of the day. This was a weird one. I parked at the access to the trail on Midwood Farm Drive. There is a State Forest marker on a tree right at the trailhead. I went in here, and using my gps kept following trails in the general direction of the highpoint. It was a bit up and down, and a bit roundabout but it got there. At the top are the footings of an old fire tower and a benchmark. Coming down, I wanted to see if the trail past Hulseman Pond was faster. It was, and considerably so. However it pops you out in what appears to be a driveway, though I didn't see any signage. There were some nice folks admiring their geese who seemed unfazed by my sudden appearance. I hiked back via the road to my car. About half way back, two police cruisers, flat out hauling, roared past me. I think the road dead ends back at the pond, they must have been checking out something that I had just passed, or maybe I was the cause? As I approached my car, a neighbor popped out of his house and asked me what the cops were doing. I had no idea and told him as much. Then he asked about my car...'yes, that is my car.' 'What were you doing?' 'Hiking.' 'Why were the cops going that way?' I was tempted to say "Hey, if I get all these questions right, do I win something?", instead I just wished them a nice day and headed back to Groton. Odd. |
