Ascent Trip Report

From SSE, Gemeindealp public car park. Superb outing, straightforward but some dramatic situations.

Road initially, then path, which zigzags up thru trees to cross scree then ascends the Bärendloch, a steep wide easy ledge which makes an ascending traverse of Kaiserschild SW face (2nd and 4th sections cabled as there are some exposed sections, although it's barely a scramble). The path then undulates at foot of cliffs. The foot of the klettersteig is passed (quite a hard one, sections of grade D/E) then a slightly awkward, exposed gully crossing. I soon fork R for Kaiserschild, with its trig block and Berg Frei sign. Fine views. A woman arrives from the klettersteig, her first E grade, only moderately hard, she reckons! I continue along the N ridge to Kaiserwart, P68 according to my GPS. Descending towards Hochkogel (initially on grass as per Wolfgang's track), at the col my GPS readings indicate P204m for Kaiserschild. Reaching the Hochkogel cross, I'm unsure whether to take the S ridge as I know nothing about it, but seeing another older heading down it, is my cue to follow. It's straightforward except for a steepish 10m gravelly gully (up the S ridge and down the N ridge and down Bärendloch would make both gullies easier, but there may be more hazard from the ferrata above, later in the day). Forest roads are reached and followed back to trailhead (one mapped track shortcut seems to be missing). 2h20 to Kaiserschild, 4h05 to Hochkogel, 6hrs round trip. Sunny morning, cool initially.
