Ascent Trip ReportGudi, Kaekae and I headed up the Mount Kinsman Trail on a gorgeous spring day.
The lower trails were pretty much snow free and dry. It wasn't long before we ran into the remnants of the snow monorail and then into full snow coverage. Three water crossings were open and a bit tricky, but with poles we all got across no problem.
There was a new 1-2 inch 'sticky' snow on top of the well packed monorail. The use of micro-spikes worked very well, but if you stepped off the packed part of the trail, we post holed quite deep.
When we reached the junction of the Kinsman Ridge Trail the views were wonderful! At this elevation there was a fresh 2" powder that was broken in already by some snowshoes. The trees were covered in a thick layer of ice on the east facing side, was pretty cool looking. We reached the top of North Kinsman at 1:20pm, only a few puffy white clouds were in the sky and just a slight breeze. Absolutely gorgeous!
While Kaekae and Gudi sunned themselves on the ledge of No. Kinsman I made a quick trip to So. Kinsman. From South Kinsman there were great views of No Kinsman and Kinsman pond with Lafayette and Lincoln in the background.
The trip back down Mount Kinsman Trail was quite tricky as the snow had softened up quite a bit and post-holing became quite frequent.
By the time we got down the mountain, there was a lot of running water and the lower trails were quite muddy.
