Ascent of Sam Knob on 2011-04-20
|Date:||Wednesday, April 20, 2011|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-North Carolina|
| Elevation:||6040 ft / 1840 m|
Ascent Trip ReportFrom the parking area at the end of Black Balsam Road, follow trail 617, which is unmarked but starts on the old road beyond the gate. This starts at 5800 feet and descends gently to a saddle at 5660. At the trail junction on the far side of the saddle, turn R on the Sam Knob Summit Trail.
There are two summits in the 6040 contour. The NW summit is probably higher, but the SE summit is worth visiting, too. Great 360-degree views.
Roundtrip hike: 3 miles. I combined this with a hike to Chestnut Bald for a total of 7.2 miles, including the half-mile of road between the trailheads.
