Ascent Trip ReportSUMMARY
Middle of nowhere rich with history.
East and West both passenger passable. East is shorter. MANY dozens of campers, trucks, and cars both directions in higher density the closer to Silver City you get.
Summit road is mid-clearance almost right away. Popular with OHVs and 4x4s. Smooth dirt road until plateau South of War Eagle. Large sharp rocks as the road drops and heads East to Hayden but easy mid-clearance.
I made it up the final leg to the summit but it was the absolute torque limit of my Honda Element and I had to keep it floored. Don't attempt in anything without 4x4/low unless you're totally confident or foolish (or both) - there are no turnouts and a couple spots are 15+d.
I hadn't done my research on the area and didn't realize Silver City was right there! I wish I'd had time to explore but I did take a slow drive through town to gawk at all the historic buildings.
Tons of awesome campsites with cool blocky granite formations from the turnoff to Fairview. Interesting little cemetery just Noerth of Fairview. Multiple OHV and 4x4 groups on the road between Fairview and the summit road turnoff but no one on second half to summit.
0/1 ACCESS (roads, restrictions) - some kind of clearance necessary to get close enough to hike
0/1 REMOTENESS (popularity, sight/Sound) - quite a popular tourist destination when I was there
1/1 CONDITION (trail/route) - road to summit
2/2 VARIETY (flora/fauna, geology, terrain) - a different piece of history or geology around every corner
1/2 VIEWS (frequency, quality) - underwhelming, honestly, but can see much of the surrounding range
1/1 AWE (does it inspire) -
1/2 DANIEL FACTOR (would I enjoy climbing this again: 0=No, 1=Meh, 2=Yes) - not Hayden, but definitely Silver City and the area around!
(does not include difficulty since hikers may prefer opposite extremes)
