Ascent Trip ReportArrived Quito 3/31 on 12 day trip to visit daughter Kelly now working there for the YanaPuma Foundation. Guide Christian picked me up at 8 and about an hour later we were trying to ease our way thru the Sunday market crowd in Lloa. Got on the steep, switchbacked, rutted, muddy access road that leads to the refuge and passed several severely struggling mountain bikers. Made the lower parking area 13,546 ft. after getting passed a difficult muddy area with a 150ft. drop only a couple feet away. Guide gave me the choice to hike from there while he drove to the hut - of course, I hiked. Exactly 1 hour later I arrived at the refuge and after a brief rest we headed up the traverse across the scree/sand slope, made the ridge just below the shrine, turned hard right and followed the edge of the caldera to the summit marked with a pylon "4781 mt." A distinct smell of sulpher was in the air but no views down due to leeward cloud formation. Back down at the refuge we were met by several of the mountain bikers arriving as well as a whole family on motorcycles. Back in Foch Plaza, Quito for a beer by 2PM. Could be an interesting discussion on the differences between reported summit elevations and the apparent offset of the GPS track on different maps. i don't really care cause i got pics!
