Ascent Trip Reportw Monica, Emily, Jeff, Karine, Mike S, Joe, Kate K, Destin, Bob, and Geri. On this loop hike we will follow the Old Bridle Path to the AMC Greenleaf Hut (closed for the winter) and then the Greenleaf Trail to the Franconia Ridge Trail and Lafayette and Lincoln. We will then follow the Falling Waters Trail back to the trailhead. While there were no views to be had the temperatures were mild and the winds were weren't that strong. The climb up to the Hut was easy - the snow was packed and microspikes provided just the right amount of traction. At the hut we switched to mountaineering crampons since we knew the ice would be solid on the climb from the hut to the summit of Lafayette - it was. In fact, in some sections you couldn't even see the marks left by the tips of the crampons after you picked your feet up. We saved the river crossings on Falling Water for last in case the snow bridges collapsed and someone got wet - would rather get wet at the end of the trio and not in the beginning. The crossings were tricky but everyone stayed dry. Karine set the perfect pace on the way up en route to her 45 & 46 peaks this winter. Ran into Bob & Jeri on Lincoln and we all finished the trip together. Bob became the group photographer on the sledding sections. Another great day in the mountains with wonderful people. |
