Ascent Trip Report2021-07-08
Kris picked up us at the Lodge Vert in Chamonix and we went into Italy through the Mont Blanc tunnel. We met Mike Arnold at a parking along the national road between Aosta and Courmayeur, just at the turnoff to Valsavarenche valley in Introd. We went up the road to the parking in Terrè. Shorts and t-shirt on and then onto the trail. The trail was built with standing flat rocks and it must have taken a lot of effort. We stopped after maybe 45 minutes for a little rest and got some water from a well by a pasture. Arrived at the Federico Chabod hut, checked in, had a great pasta lunch and went to rest on the beds. Dinner at 7 and then some reading before getting back into bed.

Mike’s alarm woke me up at 2:15 after a night with on and off sleep. We had breakfast at 2:30 and was off with headlamps at about 3:05 up along the trail. Followed cairns that let us through the first skree and rock part, over a glacier drain and to the ‘’entrance’’ of the first snow. It was kind of steep. Eva climbed with Kris and I with Mike. We used the front points of the crampons and two axes to deal with the steep sections. Reached the the ridge and followed it in mixed terrain with up and down many towers to the Piccolo Paradiso. In an early section a rock came loose by the rope and hit my leg, making it hurt and numb. From the Piccolo we down climbed to a new snow col and up three sections of steep snow mixed with rock parts and towers to the Gran Paradiso summit ridge. It was up and down on rocks until the summit and past, more down and then up on fixed iron steps to the Madonna. Photo spot and then over more rocks to get to the long descent. My knee bothered me so Eva and Kris out sprinted Mike and me down to the hut. A quick stop with coffee/beer and cake, and then the descent to the valley. I took ibuprofen pills at the hut and and my descent was going much better after that. A group on the same traverse started just after us in the early morning and was at the first snow climb to the summit ridge when we left the hut for the car. Intelligence in Chamonix Monday told us they reach the Chabod hut by 11 pm. We got back to Lodge Vert in Chamonix by 10 pm and went to a pizza place with the car for takeout and ate at the hotel restaurant. The hotel provided beer for us. |
