Ascent Trip ReportThis was a 7 night tour starting and ending at Winstanley Island, via kayak across Behm Canal, foot to Manzanita Lake, row boat to Manzanita Cabin (NW), foot up the North ridge of Manzanita Point. We retraced from a cold night with horizontal rains and zero visibility down the NW ridge back to the cabin. We had hoped to run the high ridges a bit but the weather was too nasty. other explorations included the creek valley west of the cabin and a trip over to January Lake via the N. Fk. Manzanita Creek. We strapped a rain fly between our paddles and catamaran sailed our way back across Behm Canal from Manzanita Bay! Fun fun alternative to paddling the kayaks.
Between no visibility, 80' contour interval maps (1998), intense 'shwacking, numerous near vertical hidden mossy cliffs below treeline, etc. I have found SE AK routes fro water to alpine to be pretty intense.
