Ascent Trip ReportHad to make 2 visits.
From I71, exit 226 in Brunswick we drove east on 303 (crossed hwy 3) to State Road 44 at the top of the ridge. Turned right .8 miles south to Bellus Road (CR140) where we turned left and drove .37 miles to a left on King Road. Drove north .4 miles to house #1576 on the left. We drove up the driveway to the house at top of a beautiful ridge with huge trees.
Area 1 ....Jim McMillen told me that the highpoint was further south and wasn't aware that this area was a candidate. He referred me to his neighbor to the south, Bob Gibson, house #1604.
I walked over to Bob and we had a long chat, he also wasn't aware that this area was a candidate. We walked to the the PB coordinates on his property between his house and Jim's. The PB spot is somewhat lower than ground to the south, at 2 cemetery plots for his daughters cat's, my GPS read 41.23300, 81.69727. Bob told me that the ground around his house, which is higher, is not natural as it was built up.
Area 2 .... Bob showed me a recent Medina County map which puts the Highpoint south of his house on the ridge at 1325 feet, it doesn't give its location however. He told me that there is a Survey Marker on the ridge at house #1660. The owner, a single lady, is very ill with cancer and both Bob and Jim recommended that we not disturb her. We took their advice and left it for another day.
Bob and Jim have had a number of people inquiring about the highpoint(very friendly to Highpointers). Bob said that he had the president of the USA Highpointers Club visit over 10 years ago. I informed him that this year's Highpointers Convention is being held in Bellefontaine Ohio. He knew that this was the states highpoint.
ADDENDUM #1 DATED 2013-03-03
We came back for a second visit and drove directly to house #1660 right on top of the ridge which was covered with 3-4" of snow. No one answered the door so I took the liberty to walk the high ground and called it good. I didn't see the Survey Marker.
