Ascent Trip ReportFathers Day afternoon hike. We've been to Mt. Cardigan many times before, but this was our first time climbing from the state park side. We started on the heavily-trafficked West Ridge Trail, then branched onto the much less used South Ridge Trail. This was a nice way to climb, with a difficulty level comparable to the Winslow Trail on Mt. Kearsarge. There were a few steep scramble sections approaching Rimrock. Views were excellent on this clear day. We took short breaks at Rimrock and South Peak. It's a nice ridge walk with views up to the top as you approach it. The final section on the Clark Trail is much steeper than if you go up the West Ridge Trail. We spent a while wandering around the summit enjoying the day. It was moderately busy. We descended on the West Ridge Trail, which was a much less exciting route, but good for the way back since it was easier. |
