Ascent Trip ReportThe GPX shows my ascent. (Batteries died on the summit.) Returned via Kathy Rich's descent track.
The hike starts with a 500-foot drop down Lost Cannon Creek on an unmaintained trail. After crossing the creek on a small log dam, I climbed a moderately steep slope covered with thickets of brush and aspen and teeming with mosquitos and black flies. Small meadows of larkspur, paintbrush, monkey flower, etc. dotted the hillside.
After some navigational errors, I finally summitted about 1:00 pm in a howling, zephyr wind. Sadly, I couldn't find a register, only a piece of broken glass under some rocks.
The descent went smoothly and, at precisely 3:49 pm, I was again in the clutches of the aspens when, wham!, what I later found out was a M6.0 tremor struck and everything started shaking. The rolling ground movement seemed surreal at first, and I thought maybe the heat and dehydration had caught up with me. But then I realized -- earthquake! I held onto a sturdy tree trunk for balance and watched in awe as the aspens shook amid the sound of nearby rockfall. At that moment, I was thankful to be off the mountain and not a first-hand observer (or victim!) of gravity doing its thing.
