Ascent Trip ReportDrove up the night before to scope things out. Saw the sign right off I-70 saying you needed a reservation. Went online that night and reserved a parking spot at Summit Lake for $7 for the next morning between 8 and 10. Slept at the Walmart in Evergreen.
Next morning got to Summit Lake at 7:15. Gate was open 9 miles below Summit Lake but there was nobody there to check my reservation so I just drove up. Left at 7:30, 40 degrees. About 30 minutes in I was stopped for 20 minutes by 2 mountain goats standing on the trail. Once they left I headed up to Mt. Spalding at 8:50. A class 2+ move or two below Spalding. About 2 miles in you get to the start of the scramble to reach the Evans summit. Here the trail was hard to find. Many people were going to high. The trail was actually down a bit which didn't seem right but here you would find a few cairns. Easy, fun scramble except for the annoying guy from Texas trying to tell me what to do. Near the summit you see the parking lot and the mobs of tourists walking the short trail to the summit. Hit the summit then immediately turned around and headed back. Worst summit experience since Washington in NH.
Back to the car at 12:40 in 5.8 miles. Overall a beautiful area and a nice short quiet hike except for the summit experience which was a huge bummer but predictable. |
