Ascent Trip Report

From Bamberg we drove west on #78 (through Denmark) for 10.8 miles to Mt Zion Road (S-5-38) on the right, large sign "Mt Zion Baptist Church", the Barnwell County Line is .3 miles to the east.

Area 1 ..... We turned right and traveled north on MT Zion .68 miles to a T-Junction where we made a right (on the way here you go over the crest of the road at .5 miles from #78), this is the TH for Area 3). From the T-Junction we went east .25 miles (Mt Zion Church with its cemetery on the corner), turned left and continued north .22 miles to the crest in the road (at what looks like an east-west broad ridge). Parked here, to the left is a small clearing with old farm structures, on the right (east) is a beautiful rowed pine forest and the high ground.
I walked a slight rise east in a row of pines about 150 yards (open forest floor, easy walking) to where the ground flattens. As you look around the ground slopes in all directions and you are definitely on high ground. I stomped around and choose my spot at 33.36151, 81.20570, any spot is as good as the next.

Area 2 ..... We returned to the T-Junction and drove the sand road west (no postings) to a height-of-land at .3 miles and a dirt track that heads right (north) to the obvious bump (white tank and a pumping station) at .14 miles. This tank is not in Colleton County but perhaps 100 yards west of the Colleton/Barnwell County Line. I parked north of the tank and walked north/east trying to get near the candidate high ground without walking on the plowed land.
Note: Just as you reach the height-of-land there is a track that heads south, which others have used to go to Area 3 (I didn't use this route).
When I got back to Mt Zion Road a gentleman in a truck stopped us and asked what I was doing. He was the owner of the property and didn't know that this area was the County's highground. He was OK with us going on his land, a very friendly chap.

Area 3 ..... From the T-Junction we drove south on Mt Zion Road to its crest noted above in Area 1 (.56 miles from #78). This was my TH. PB puts the high ground for this area is the open rowed pine forest to the west.
I walked west in the rowed pine forest about 200 yards, the forest floor covered with some undergrowth with thorny vines. I stomped around looking for high ground, went/circled south about 70 yards to the edge of the forest ...... large planted open field to the south. On the way back east to the TH I choose a spot just inside the woods, about 150 yards from Mt Zion Road, 33.35581, 81.21353.
