Ascent Trip Report

Kept inquiring for a about a year and a half whether mt grant was reopening to the public after closing for Covid. Finally they reopened in June I believe. Got vetted and filled out my application.

Picking up the key was interesting. Nice placid campus for the base on a 4th of July Sunday and all of the private security contractors running the base were interesting characters.

After passing security and picking up the key I headed back north to cottonwood canyon through the town of walker lake. Spent the next 40 minutes or so driving to the summit through and elevation gain of around 7000 feet. Most of the gain is probably in the last 20-30% of the route. For most of the route any passenger car could probably make it up except a few spots where you’d have to get out and roll some rocks out of the way.

Got to the top and the climb looked a bit formidable with what looked somewhat like a steep shale ascent with a thousand foot drop off to the east. First tried to take a more slowly ascending route to the west to see if could loop around and up from the opposite direction. Made our way through loose-ish rocks and miscellaneous boulders. When we got there there wasn’t a safe way to ascend to the peak (I should note a lot of map apps place the peak at a lower point where there is a well constructed wind break a little further north rather than the actual high point).

Headed back down and then tried the straight up approach . This turned out to be easier than expected, most of the rocks were pretty firm and the ones that weren’t were easily detected by applying a test footing or hand hold. A little ways up it turned more to sharp angular boulders that were entertaining to climb. I happened to have some gardening gloves with some kind of plasti dip coating and it was fun climbing up or down palm first pretending to be Spider-Man.

Great views from the op. Was a hazy day but could see at least two other county high points, boundary peak and middle sister north ridge. Probably could see east peak mt Davidson and maybe desatoya If it had been clearer. Maybe even a long shot mt. Rose.
