Ascent of Shepherd Mountain on 2011-03-12Date: | Saturday, March 12, 2011 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Shepherd Mountain | Location: | USA-North Carolina | Elevation: | 1150 ft / 350 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThe HP on the mountain is inside a fence at a communications tower. However, the HP of the trip (as Brian Bockhahn discovered) is climbing the 120-foot fire tower near the summit. Call the good folks at the Mount Shepherd Retreat Center at 336-629-4085 for permission to hike, and they may offer you a key to the tower. The March wind was whipping and I didn't have the nerve to go all the way to the top, but the view above the tree line was spectacular. The skylines of Winston-Salem, High Point, and Greensboro were visible. Beyond them, Pilot Mountain, the Sauratown Mountains, and part of the Blue Ridge. The computer (www.heywhatsthat.com) says it is possible to see Elk Knob 104 miles W/NW (bearing 292). It was not clear enough to verify today, but it certainly seems possible. That would make Mount Shepherd one of at least 35 COHPs visible from my "home" mountain.
My 65th COHP and 33rd in NC. |
