Ascent Trip ReportWhat a perfect day for a hike! I took the Hot Spring Mtn Rd. I started out right around 5,000 ft at a nice flat pull-out. I could have driven further, but the whole point of coming out here was to hike. At around 5,860, there was a tree across the trail, before the junction with the trail up from the San Ysidro River. This tree could be easily moved by 2-3 people. There is a great parking pull-out about 100 yards below here near a pile of logs that could hold 2-3 cars. Above the tree, there were a number of snow patches, some of them unavoidable for hikers. Another tree is across the trail (this one certainly unmovable) about half a mile past the junction. From here, there are many more patches of snow on the road to the summit. I checked out the view from the tower and then headed over to the actual summit. There is a flat slab of cement on the summit rock. Ascend the NE side of the rock. The BM is in a hole in the cement and the summit register is just below the summit cement slab in a crack in the rock. I was the second party to climb this peak in 2011. Definitely no footprints in the snow patches visible - only party on the mountain!
Access update: The reservation is open from 8am-4pm Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Mondays. It is $9 per vehicle. The road all the way to the reservation entrance is paved. The Hot Springs Mtn Rd (dirt) is easily passable by passenger vehicles up to 6,000 ft where the junction with the road up from the San Ysidro River meets it. After here, there were too many snow patches for me to tell if the road was really rutted an impassable or good to go. As of March, 2011, there is a really big tree blocking the road about half a mile past this junction. Pics |
