Ascent Trip Report

Heading north on the Blue Ridge Parkway, turn onto a county gravel road slightly more than a half mile north of mile marker 214 (marked, if I remember correctly, 612, sorry I didn't write it down). A previous trip report mentions a dirt road, a possible source of confusion since there is dirt road into the woods a few hundred yards before this turn. Turn right almost immediately onto Fisher's Peak Road. This appears to be an area with lots of construction of summer homes and hunter's cabins. You will pass several Private Road signs. After the last house (about 1.1 mi. in) road quality deteriorates rapidly. There had been heavy rain and snow the day before I arrived, but even in better weather I doubt you would want to do this road in a low clearance passenger vehicle. I drive a Hyundai Tucson with 4wd and pretty high clearance and I'm used to rough mountain roads from summers in New Mexico, but I baled at a washout spot and parked 2.6 mi. in. From there it's an easy road walk of slightly more than half a mile.
