Ascent Trip Report

I went hiking solo this morning and decided to quit holding off on this peak that's both nearby, and scenic. I was pleasantly surprised that even though I knew it was scenic, I underestimated this little ridgeline bump.

I got off I-89 at exit 58 for Middlesex (yes, we should use the milepoint numbers) and headed north to north on a few different gravel roads to end up on N Bear Swamp Rd. There were two parking areas and I parked in the second which was the one with the signage, but both work. I decided to not bring a pack and just start well hydrated which worked out for a relatively short hike. I did bring a granola bar in my pocket for the summit. On the first part of the trail I saw four red newts, a snail, and a few insects in the trail. It had rained last night and everything was still wet unless in direct sunlight. This slowed my pace higher up when I encountered wet rocks, boardwalks, and ladders. The trail isn't too technical until the Bob Kemp Trail junction, then it goes to class 2 from just 1. Higher up, the trail gets on a bedrock ledge and then the views begin. You kind of zigzag on the rocks and pass a another junction that says the top is 0.15mi away. In this last section, there were two class 3 spots that were easy enough, but added a fun element to the end of the hike. The top was an obvious boulder among a few short trees. Despite not being the highest peak on the ridge, you can see peaks in all directions, and very few are obscured. It was neat to see Camel's Hump and Whiteface nearly side-by-side.

I went a little quicker on the way down, but of course the wet rocks slowed me down again. I finally saw some people on the trail, and passed seven total on the way down. I would highly recommend this peak for the views, little scrambles, and fewer crowds than Mount Hunger.
