Ascent Trip ReportBeautiful day to traverse Chinook and Crystal Peaks! The PCT has patchy snow on it to the bowl. Bowl has snow, but it is melting fast. We ended up bushwhacking a bit heading up to the ridge from the bowl. Doable - but you may be able to avoid this by picking a different line from my track. Patchy snow on the approach to Chinook. More snow on the traverse from Chinook to Crystal. We had to stay off the ridge itself due to cornices, and went lower. On the low line, we crossed one area where we needed microspikes and ice axes. (Where the track stops for a bit - I paused it while we were crossing this mildly sketchy part.) Ended up hitting the trail to Crystal Peak and following it up to the top.
Crystal Peak trail is almost snow free. Only small snow patches. We felt fine on it in hiking boots and poles. |
