Ascent Trip Report

This hike completed my redlining of Sandwich Dome. Three more hikes to go to get the Waterville patch. We started from the Bennett Street trailhead, which we had been to before when we hiked to Flat Mountain Pond. We started on the lower section of Bennett Street, then took Gleason Trail and Flat Mountain Pond Trail to re-intersect Bennett Street. Gleason Trail is a really pointless connecter; I think they should have decommissioned the entire thing rather than leaving the useless lower section. Bennett Street was a much steeper trail than I expected. There's not much to see on the way up; it's no more scenic than Smarts Brook Trail. The section on the old logging road is a nice break from the steep climbing. Near the top the trail passes through a nice fir forest. The summit was very crowded when we arrived and the black flies were swarming, so we took a quick look at the hazy view and moved on. We headed down the Algonquin Trail to the ledges for lunch. This was a much nicer spot for today, though there were still a lot of bugs. We descended the Black Mountain Pond Trail, which is definitely more difficult than going up. The oversized rock scrambles are trickier to slide down. The views were nice though. We took an extended break at the shore of the pond. We also took the spur trail past the campsite to the opposite shore, which I had missed last time. The hike out was very long and uneventful, but we did see an unbelievable number of lady slippers as we started down the trail from the pond. There were hundreds in bloom all along the trail, both pink and white! The marsh near the bottom was nice, and the brook crossings were not too high. The eastern section of Guinea Pond Trail is excessively long and boring. It is also difficult to locate where it crosses a marsh on unstable logs. We hiked out for the last half hour under the rain.
