Ascent Trip ReportCamped at the intersection of the forest service road and the faint Basin Canyon jeep trail. Decided to start from there instead of take the slow drive to the end of the road.
After muscling through some steep scree to get to the first ridge, the trail/route became pretty clear. Mosly open country hiking through low sagebrush until we got to the upper saddle for a lunch break. Standard desert peak where the only way is up.
Once the vegetation gave way to more loose rock, there was a marked trail, though it didn't skip much of the scree or steep grade. Don't miss the beauty of the rocks on this hike. Crystal quartz, dark shale, and everything in between. As you look toward the ridge above, it will look like the top, but yes, there are false summits. At least one. Thankfully, the last bit of the climb was flat and easy. Views were spectacular all around. Ridges of more summits to the south, and desert ranges as far as we could see in every direction.
We followed much of the same route down, but tried to skip the scree on the final descent by continuing through the trees along the shoulder. It ended up being just as steep, but thick brush instead of talus. Even score in my book. Great hike, but steep. Highly recommend.
