Ascent Trip ReportAs I was driving to the TH from the south, I noticed South Bubble's rocky face. It looked like it could be a lot of fun. So, walking south from the Bubbles Divide trailhead I left the trail at a spot where it looked like I could get to the steepest part of the mountain. I soon reached the rock, and after a few minutes of trying a few different ways that got me to 5th class exposed terrain where I had to retreat, I found a way that gradually took be closer to the top. Soon I noticed a bunch of iron bars and rails and realized there was old abandoned via ferrata here! And I totally just stumbled upon it. A few more minutes of route-finding problem solving over 4th and low 5th-class terrain finally got me to the via ferrata. I backtracked one or two hundred feet just to see what it was like until I got to a point that was a little tricky, and I figured that was a good enough time to turn around and continue following the via ferrata up the mountain. I did do until the via ferrata seemed to disappear, then turn left straight up to reach the trail just south of the summit.
This really made Acadia National Park for me. Up until this point I just saw it as an overcrowded tourist trap, but this was a great adventure! However, if you do this, I highly recommend you do the full via ferrata and not try to shortcut your way up as I did, there was some quite sketchy stuff while I was off-route scrambling. |
