Ascent Trip Report

Another long tricky drive but Glen masterfully navigated thru the forest roads and we avoided slippery mud sections and got to the designated trailhead. This TH is very lovely and the grassy slopes and patchy trees make for great starting views. On the way to the TH we had the pleasure of have a small herd of prong horn run along the road with us then suddenly cross the road right in front of our truck with majestic grace and power. They were huge pronghorn possibly because of the abundance of lush grass after this record spring rains. We also had the pleasure to have three F-16s do a flyover when we were getting back into the truck and the second one was flying very close to the ground with impressive maneuverability and authority!

This was a shorter bushwhack that 39 mile but much tougher. We headed up thru the steep grassy slopes into the bristlecone pines and then up an nasty loose talus pile. No interlocking material and it was rhyolite chunks here not the basalt of our earlier journey. Crossing the talus at its angle or repose was tricky but once we made it past and up the ridge it was easy hiking and great views again.

The top has an American flag and a register but oddly for a 2k prom peak only views in 180 degrees due to the bristlecone pines blocking one side but the open side and cliffs were impressive and worth the journey. Coming down we took an easier grade further to the west. Unless you like swimming in unlocked rhyolite talus, we recommend that you take the western track we show but up and down the ascent!
