Ascent Trip Report

Long day in spring conditions. Took the trail from Bear Creek, the crossing of Spruce Creek was about knee deep and the water was moving at a fast clip. The freezing water was an unpleasant surprise in the early am. We headed up Vinegar Mountain on trail and didn’t hit snow until above 6,000 ft. Nice ridge walk between Vinegar and Forester in decent consolidated snow. We had planned to make a loop and come back by way of the ridge connected to Furlong, but a huge snow drift made the ridge impassable leaving the only options to traverse a steep snow slope that had been in the warm sun all day, or navigate down the cliffs to krumholtz below and find a lesser angled slope. We started to descend but as a group felt uneasy about the snow conditions we were going to have to enter and ultimately decided to return the way we came was the safe bet. We had varying stats from each of our GPS devices ranging from 24-27 miles and 6000-7800 ft gained. All in all a big day for May. The trail was very active with animal tracks, we saw multiple bear tracks of different sizes and new tracks on our return after we had stomped the ones on the way out. Also tracks of wolf, moose, elk, and badger/wolverine.
