Ascent of Organ Needle on 2021-05-29Date: | Saturday, May 29, 2021 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Organ Needle | Location: | USA-New Mexico | Elevation: | 8980 ft / 2737 m |
Ascent Trip ReportLate May was a difficult time for this climb. I struggled on the way down due to the heat (35 C) and route-finding. There is a trail and rock piles/ribbons but the trail quality is inconsistent and I often found myself off the trail and needed to backtrack or bushwack to where I thought the trail was. There are enough tracks created by other confused climbers that more route indicators would be helpful, or bring a GPS. This was potentially dangerous in some spots when descending. I brought 5 L of water and that was not enough.
There is only one short techical-ish portion, just below the summit. The hike gains a lot of elevation in a short distance and the only basic hiking portion is at the start. Panoramic views into Mexico, Texas, and the rest of New Mexico at the top, as it is the highest point in the area. |
