Ascent Trip ReportAfter checking the LiDAR for Newport County, I homed in on the rock outcrop off of Pocasset Ave as the highest natural point. Driving in on MA/RI 24, we had to decipher the new exit numbers on the signs based on the old exit numbers on our GPS. The solution is to look for the correct road name. Congrats to these states for committing to a much better exit numbering system based on the mile marker the exit is at. We took Main Rd/RI 138 north and turned right on Pocasset Ave and parked at the turnaround at the end.
Several use trails entered the woods, and 70' in there sits an obvious high boulder. We did have to contend with poison ivy and some thorns; don't step on a thorn bush when your climbing partner is holding it. There was no evidence from the high boulder of any former towers. We then made a hasty retreated and visited the remarkable Herreschoff Museum.
