Ascent Trip Report

Extremely low snow year made Avalanche Gulch unattractive so we took the Clear Creek route. Short approach to camp at 8.5k ft is really nice. A lot of sandy campsites available with running water nearby. Climb from camp is a scree slog - not very pleasant. Scramble section above UFO/Mushroom Rock is kind of like Aasgard Pass on the way to the Enchantments in WA. Steep and loose, slow up and down but not difficult. Summit plateau still covered in snow/ice, but a nice boot path led to the summit block so crampons were not needed. There were no glissade opportunities so descent took longer than expected. At least camp to TH was quick and easy.

Mt Shasta summit from camp at ~8,400 ft on Clear Creek route. No much snow for mid-May. Clear Creek route was plan B because very little snow was left on Avalanche Gulch route (2021-05-16). Photo by Rick Teudt.
