Ascent Trip ReportI accessed Fort Mountain while running west along Swamp Road, after running and hiking nearby Nottingham Mountain. From Swamp Road, I turned north on Mountain View Rd, and then took Old Mountain Road until I reached a road marked "Authorized Vehicles Only". I continued that way for a short distance, and saw a vehicle gate, with a large sign warning that travel on the road requires 4WD and chains on all tires in the winter. It also said that hikers are welcome.
I ran up the road, which makes a steep ascent the entire way, switching back a few times. It is a little under a mile to the summit, with nearly 600' elevation gain, so it's a challenging run. It gave me flashbacks to the mountain races I've attempted. There is a large red and white communications tower at the summit, and a rocky outcrop that is clearly the highest point. The summit is treeless, and offers a superb view in all directions, except in the direction of the tower and the building. I lingered at this summit for at least five minutes before running back down.
