Ascent Trip Report

Hickorynut Mountain is a subpeak of Sassafras Mountain. Maps vary on the elevation (3,488 to 3,483) but either way it is the 2nd highest summit in SC. It is easily accessible via a 3.5m RT hike from the parking lot at Sassafras Mountain.

Follow the Foothills Trail toward Table Rock/Pinnacle Mtn. This trail also carries the Palmetto Trail for 0.8 miles. Stay left when they fork at a sign and Palmetto Trail kiosk. (The Palmetto Trail here leads to Round Mountain, where a new trail features a hemlock grove). At about 1.0 miles, there is a picturesque campsite on the right at the old Cantrell homeplace. Continue on the trail as it circles around the south end of the summit. Stay with the trail past its crest, and you will soon find an old Jeep Trail on the left that leads to the summit.
