Ascent Trip ReportI am entering this TR only to keep Highpointers abreast of today's on-ground situation.
Today's plan was Taylor County's 22 Candidate High Point Areas. It didn't take long to find out that today was not the day for this swampy County, we approached from the west, driving on the dirt Main Bay Canal Road no more than 2-3 miles, before deciding to turn back. Numerous water/muddy sections were exceptionally bad, due the recent rains, much too chancy for our passenger van. When you go to this County pay special attention to the recent rains, you need dry ground conditions.
On the way out we met Fran on her way in to access the Florida trail, she is section-hiking the trail and has completed 500 miles ...... after discussing the road conditions she also decided to turn back.
We decided to move-on south to Dixie County, located in a more dryer area.
From the Cross City intersection US98/19/CR351, we traveled east on CR351 for 5.5 miles to a left turn on NE 370th Street, Scrub Creek Baptist Church with its Cemetery on corner ..... PB's main Highpoint is due north 2.2 miles at the Holly Hill Fire Tower.
We drove north on NE 370th Street to find a locked gate at half a mile, huge sign "Road Closed" with few others "Ray Sawmill Hunting Club, No Trespassing".
As we sat at the gate having our lunch and somewhat still pissed, a truck pulled-up to open the gate, on the way to the Tower to do maintenance work. He informed us that the area is under Government hands, the Tower has been fitted with "Air Traffic Control Instrumentation" and no one is allowed in. He didn't know who can give us the permission to enter, saying that the Hunting Club only leases the land.
Future Highpointers will need to do some research work before entering/claiming this one ....... my guess is to start with the Hunting Club for the name of the land owners.
We didn't bother with the other 2 candidates at this time.
"YOU'LL NEVER SUCCEED IF YOU DON'T TRY AGAIN."
