Ascent Trip ReportThis was a brutal climb near the end. We drove into Ventana Resort, which is Coast Ridge Rd. We parked in the overflow parking lot of the resort. There is a gate on the Coast Ridge Rd., so you hike up the road. We got to about 2.5 miles and that is where we should have gone cross-country. We didn't see it, so we kept going to an old 4wd driveway with a faint No Trespassing sign. We went up that "driveway" and then looked at our options. It was poor going east and contouring, so we went west and picked our way through poison oak. We descended to a gully and then went up the other side on steep terrain and loose rock under bushes. We climbed up the rib basically in a northern heading along the park boundary. We finally came to the high spot and called it. Then it was descend to a wash...through poison oak and loose rock. This led to a better up and out exit back to the approach road. I can't load my GPS track as it has more than 3000 points, but I will upload my partners when I receive it. This one wasn't as easy as the day before. The views were still spectacular though. CA State Park number 260. |
