Ascent Trip ReportSOLO Trip!
4/16 Drove up Friday afternoon. On the Trail at Walker Pass t/h at 6:00. Hiked four miles up. Saw a family of quail. Camped the night at the little saddle below Morris. Brought up 7 liters of water- as there would be no water sources on the trail. I had spotty at&t service at this location.
4/17 Headed up Morris with full pack at 10:17 am. Summited at 11:05. Hiked down the north side of Morris on the steep 'use trail'. Reached start of Jenkins at 1:00 pm. Headed up, dropped pack at bivy site at 7,327'. Climbed to the summit, last ~800' with only fanny pack, snack, jacket, and phone. Summit at 2:30. The tiny bit of class 3 at the top was a breeze. I didn't find any summit markers, but there was a newer looking register. Had lunch when I reached my pack at the bivy site. Back on the PCT at 3:50 pm. Did the math (enough water, fuel, time) and decided to continue to Owens. Reached the saddle of Jenkins and Ownes (6,946') at 5:20. I had spotty at&t service at this location. Saw a friendly rabbit.
4/18 Saw the sunrise, but caught a little more sleep before getting up. 8:36 start for Owens summit. Generally class 2 scrambling with route finding - cairns and my gps track made it pretty straight forward. There was one section early on with a group of downed trees. Why are so many of the trees in this area so unhealthy? Saw zero people on my way up (or down) on my route. Took one snack break. Passed the false summit and reached the top at 11:15. Had the summit all to myself. Lunch and selfies. No at&t service on top. Headed off the summit at 12:05 pm. Down climbing and retracing my steps was tedious, boring, and I was lonely. Saw 2 hikers on their way up the class 3 route far away and at a lower elevation than me. I reached my bivy at the saddle at 2:05 pm, with a wonderful surprise — my husband had driven 3 hours up, and hiked all the way in to see me, and hike with me back to the cars. Super sweet! Saw a hummingbird. I took a well deserved break, packed up my campsite, and got back on the trail at 2:56 pm. We reached the cars at Walker Pass t/h at 7:05 pm. Reached home in South OC after 10:00 pm.
I was very lucky and had perfect cool weather all weekend.
