Ascent of Organ Needle on 2001-03-31Date: | Saturday, March 31, 2001 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Organ Needle | Location: | USA-New Mexico | Elevation: | 8980 ft / 2737 m |
Ascent Trip ReportWith about a dozen others, led by Scott Holzhauser. It was mostly a New Mexico gang, but a few of us Arizonans caught wind of this hike and joined in.
The hike up was steep and tiring but nothing impossible. Once around the other side, we carefully picked our way to the proper gully and all of us climbed up the exposed section without ropes or belay. We spent about 30 minutes at the summit. It was a beautiful blue day.
Going down, I brought out my rope and harness and a few of us took advantage of this to get a belay for the downclimb. Once down the rocky parts, we all hiked out to the vehicles. It had been a long and tiring day.
