Ascent Trip ReportWe got a call from Miller State Park during our drive to the mountain to notify us that they were closing the toll booth early because they had gotten a foot of fresh snow on the summit and 5-6in at the bottom. We didn't know what that meant for the lot, as we had bought a parking pass and still wanted to hike. After eating in Peterborough with Boege and Jordan, we drove over to the park and had no issues parking. With all of the fresh snow, it seemed that the easiest way up would be to follow the track of most people and use the toll road instead of the trails. We also saw ski tracks, making me realize we could have skinned up. I wore microspikes to lessen the slipping, but Katrina did not. It ended up being a straightforward walk, but every step included some squishing of snow and slush requiring extra effort like walking on a beach. There were a few viewpoints along the way where we could see nearby hills and ominous clouds passing overhead. At the summit area we immediately went for the fire tower and enjoyed those views. Similar views can be had in different corners of the parking lot, including of Monadnock, which looked great in fresh snow. The highest ground seemed to be either below the tower at the NH DOT benchmark, or at a rock outcrop just north of there, still within the loop of the road.
The way down was a bit quicker and easier, but we were warned to use low gear by the sign at the top. This didn't feel much like a road walk with the new snow as we rarely saw any pavement, which made it that much nicer. Some construction equipment was parked along the way as they are working on the power lines to the top, but this didn't cause any restrictions on this day.
