Ascent Trip ReportMy daughter and I approached Panorama Point from the northeast, via I-80 and the exit for Bushnell, following Road 17 south. I quite enjoyed this route, as it gave a much better feel for the high plains and ranching in western Nebraska than flying down the interstate ever will. The weather was windy and cold, threatening spring snow. All roadways were in excellent condition, though gravel.
The high point itself was very cold, with strong wind and temperatures in the 20s, before taking wind chill into account. As we arrived just after sunset, the blinking red lights of the surrounding wind turbines caught much of our attention.
Leaving Panorama Point, we followed the described route to Pine Bluffs, WY (as we were to continue travelling west on I-80). I found this route more simple and direct, with more time on pavement. I wouldn't be surprised if this were the quicker access, even for those approaching the high point from the east.
Thank you to the private property owners, this is a beautiful spot and we appreciate you sharing the high point of Nebraska with visitors. |
