Ascent Trip Report

Me and my mom drove off I-95 off exit 392 onto UT-13, and transitioned onto W 20800 N. We crossed the Short Divide Road and entered Clarkston. A dirt road that was muddy at the time led to the Winter Canyon Trailhead. Wearing a pair of very thin gloves, and no snowshoes, we set off the road and walked 0.9 miles to the Winter Canyon Trailhead. Our Toyota 4-Runner could not make it further. We started hiking the trail, and the first 500 feet was deficit of snow, but after that the whole hike was full of snow. The trail was barely visible, and we ended up bushwhacking a couple times. Thank god we had AllTrails to help us. We continued on the snow-covered trail up to about 6,700 feet when the snow became knee-deep, and it caused us to slow down a lot. The snow then stopped for about 100 feet but resumed at 6,725 feet. The snow continued to deepen, and at 7,000 feet and one mile from the summit, the snow became waist deep, and we starting postholing. We continued up to 7,250 feet when there was a waist-deep 35 degree section that occurred. At this point, we decided to turn back and return the way down we came. This hike was an attempt at #5 for Utah Prominence Peaks, and we were 0.85 miles from the summit. We decided to go to Idaho to get a new state afterwards. Beautiful hike, and awesome views, but just too snowy.
