Ascent Trip ReportHaving left for Big Bend on Friday after work we were somewhat limited on getting to the park. Mid-Missouri Friday night we hoped to get to the park late Saturday night. Even though we had reserved two backwoods sites, we were not able to get a trail head campsite online. We felt getting to the park late might pose a problem so stayed at cheap hotel in Fort Stockton Saturday night. Arrived at the park Sunday morning and got started on the Pinnacles trail. Had reserved Pinnacles 1 campsite so hiked up to it and left our gear there. Continued up to Emory that afternoon and sat on top for a few minutes. Last few feet a nice rock scramble. Found a couple of rocks to sit on in between the two rockpiles at the top and toasted the mountain with a scotch. Hiked back down to our campsite and cooked dinner. Next day hiked around the mountain on the Colima trail over to Blue Creek campsite. Would have done the South Rim, but had run out of water and, contrary to the maps, all springs were dry. Ended up leaving our gear again, this time at Blue Creek site #1, and hiked out to fill up all water containers--3.3 miles. With plenty of water, hiked back up to Blue Creek and set up camp. I'm sure the peak is an easy day hike, but we were looking to get out for a couple of days. Nice trails and a nice hike.
Stopped in Marfa on the way to Guadalupe Mts. Nat. Park--very interesting town. Also hiked in Palo Duro Canyon on the way home--what an amazing place!
