Ascent of Mount Saint Helens on 2021-04-01Date: | Thursday, April 1, 2021 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Mount Saint Helens | Location: | USA-Washington | Elevation: | 8333 ft / 2539 m |
Ascent Trip ReportFirst day with permit quota - only ~10 cars in parking lot at 6:30 am and only saw ~40 people on the mountain. Snow was firm and icy in the morning. Put on crampons at Chocolate Falls since we were already stopped there for a snack. Boot path was easy to follow. Snow above ~6-7k ft was too hard for kicking steps and steps from previous days were melted out. Did not stay long on the crater rim because it was windy (30+ mph) and cold (26 degrees). Descended to about 7.5k ft and found a nice sheltered spot behind a small ridge to have lunch. We were able to glissade most of the way down from our lunch spot, but the sliding was slow below ~6.5k ft because we had to make new chutes in the soft snow. 9h 10m C2C with a few long breaks. |
