Ascent Trip ReportRoads to the Yadkin HP are now gated but are not posted.
This is a sizeable ridge not named on the USGS topo. According to the 1954 USGS survey it was known locally as Bald Knob. The "Click BM" name is for Grace Click, who owned the orchards that once grew on the summit. All the orchards have been removed, and it appears likely that the summit has been graded.
Most of the ridge is now known as Mountmor, a gated community just NW of I-77 Exit 79. If you are fortunate enough to get past the "Lanternhaus" gatehouse (maybe during a real-estate open-house weekend) you could Martinize the summit. But the gate is usually chained (no new houses have been built yet) so for now, the better access is the old-fashioned way.
From Exit 79, follow US 21 N toward Elkin. Turn L on Howell Creek Road, and follow it several miles SW to its end at Swan Creek Road. Park at Swan Creek Farm Supply (elevation 1151).
Walk 0.2 miles back on Howell School Road and then turn R at the driveway for the third house on the R. This is the gravel road shown on the topo. Climb over the gate and ignore the sign that says road closed. After about a mile (passing through 2 open gates) you will come to pavement, a long house that may be a hunting lodge, and a T intersection (elevation 1584).
Turn R and follow the road around two ponds, past the brick foundation of an old apple-packing shed on the R, and through another open gate. (This is beyond the summit road shown on the topo map, which has been abandoned). When you come to a clearing, turn R and follow the grassy road up the hill over the 1720 summit and continue to the second knoll, which is the HP. I found the witness post but not the BM.
50 minutes up, 45 minutes down. Mileage approximated.
My 53rd COHP and 28th in NC.
