Ascent Trip ReportYr Aran 747m, Snowdon.
Okay, the last one today. Yr Aran is a tad isolated on the Southern edge of the Snowdon Massif but it’s a proper jagged rocky little mountain peak. Not as nice a day as yesterday with the clouds obscuring any views from the summit but any dry day in Wales is a blessing! The trail up from Rhyd Ddu was superb and it was a nice little pull up Aran’s steep but rocky nose to its indistinct unmarked summit. All in all a 3.15hr 10.3k 560m height gain jolly.
Okay so that’s the last Welsh nuttall done and it also happens to be the last Marilyn. So that is 189 Nuttalls (peaks over 609m) and 158 Marilyns (peaks with 150m prominence) done. Along the way I also picked up all the 22 county high points and a few other distinct Welsh peaks. The categories overlap somewhat but that is a sum total of 362 separate Welsh summits/tops completed. All in all the journey took a whopping 2,000kms of hiking with a total height gain of 92,000m. The land of my fathers is simply awesome.
Parking: Rhyd Ddu train station car park. £3 for four hours.
Route: Excellent track to the base of Yr Aran. Distinct path up to the steep pull of Aran to the summit and a bit of easy open country walking back to the path.
Route Statistics: 10.3km with 540m of height gain done in 3hrs 15mins.
